European Reference Networks wins the new EU Ombudsman Award

The European Union (EU) Ombudsman often deals with maladministration complaints from EU agencies and institutions; however they also bear witness to many cases of meritorious administrative tasks conducted by various professional who often go by unnoticed. The Ombudsman Award was initiated to celebrate these professionals.

The European Reference Networks (ERN) is the first winner of the Award. They bring together experts and professionals of rare diseases so that they are able to share their expertise. They use these connections to tackle rare diseases in the EU and keep up to date on specialised care treatments such as orphan medication to help patients receive the best care for their condition. With over 30 million patients that have rare diseases in the EU, the ERN allows for better-quality diagnosis, treatment and care across EU countries.
